East Glos Club to become Wimbledon of the West for six days

East Glos Club will become the Wimbledon of the West for six days from Monday 15th August as it hosts a major British tennis tournament.

The club in Old Bath Road, Cheltenham has been chosen to host the prestigious British Seniors’ Closed Grass Court Championships for a period of two years.

The championships, which are normally held at Wimbledon, have been moved to East Glos due to construction of the new roof at Wimbledon’s number one court.

The tournament comprises 22 events for age groups 60 to 85+,. with 145 players in the singles events and 56 pairs in the doubles.

The entrants include two world-ranked players. The top seed in the Men’s Singles 60+ is Paul French, who is ranked four in the world in his age group, while top seed in the Women’s Singles 80+ is June Pearce, who is number one in the world at singles and doubles.

Tournament Director Sarah Wooding said “East Glos Club and its facilities, especially the high standard of the grass courts, are ideal for this tournament. I know we will be made very welcome by the club and its members and am looking forward to an enjoyable, competitive week of tennis. Hopefully the sun will shine on us!”

The event runs from Monday 15th to Saturday 20th August with play starting at 10:30am each day (except for Monday when play starts at 11:30am).

Spectators are welcome to attend and entry is free.  The club is in Old Bath Road, Cheltenham, GL53 7DF.
