Two Tenerife titles for East Glos tennis travellers

By Steve Evans

Two East Glos couples flew to Tenerife last week for an ITF Seniors 200 tournament (and a little winter sunshine). They secured two titles and a runners-up spot.

Stephen Clayton and Steve Evans repeated their success of 2016 in the men’s 65 doubles, winning four rounds without dropping a set, culminating in a 6-1, 6-3 victory over a Swiss/Polish combination in the final.

Steve with Jacqui Matthews took the 60s mixed doubles, winning the final 6-4, 6-2 against a Lithuanian couple who alternated between arguing with each other and arguing about the score. For Jacqui, it was her first ITF title, and the ranking points move her into the world’s top 100 in mixed doubles.

Stephen and wife Dee played an incredibly tight three-team round-robin in the 65s mixed. They were unlucky to miss out on the title by one percentage point on games countback.
